Since then he has written numerous best-sellers - including JLA, BATMAN and New X-Men - as well as the critically acclaimed creator-owned series THE INVISIBLES, SEAGUY, THE FILTH, WE3 and JOE THE BARBARIAN. It took me out of it a bit because the first few issue’s art is so awesome, it’s kind of pulpy and rough, and it fits the tone of the book perfectly.Grant Morrison has been working with DC Comics for more than twenty years, beginning with his legendary runs on the revolutionary titles ANIMAL MAN and DOOM PATROL. The only real issue I had with the book was that the last 3 issues feature a different style of art and it’s a bit jarring. No other Batman writer is as good as Morrison at sneaking in little Batman easter eggs, there’s another to do with Jason’s hair being dyed black.

There’s even a surprise reference to a certain vote that occured that decided the fate of a certain character, and it’s redone here in a very entertaining and thoughtful way. Both intimidating and really quite frightening characters, but Pgy was my favourite of the two, Morrison is not afraid of writing weird and strange stories, his writing is self aware and that’s what makes it awesome. They were both briefly in batman #666, and Grant brings them into the spotlight here. Onto the villains, Proffessor Pyg and the Flamingo. But what took me by surprise was that he even gets a kind of arc in the book to do with responsibilty, won’t spoil anything but his violent nature leads him into making a mistake that later costs him, and he seems to learn from it. I always laugh when he refers to Alfred as “Pennyworth”. The way he addresses people around him, his brutal honesty and his Bruce Wayne level arrogance just have you either laughing or staring with awe whenever he speaks. Alfred also shines, offering advice and help whenever Dick is struggling with his new burden, but by far the best character here is Damian. They have awesome chemistry, and Batman actually feels noticably different here to how Bruce used to be, and that’s inportant.

It’s got Morrison’s usual witty and character driven dialogue, and his characterisations of Dick and Damian are superb. Onto the actual review, firstly, the writing is great. It collects the first 6 issues of Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin series and it’s awesome.īefore getting into the review, it’s worth reading the books that precede this one, Batman & son, black glove, rip, battle for the cowl, they’re all great stories themselves and you’l need to reed them to understand why certain things are happening here. Wow, I was very surprised by how much of a banger this book was.
